01 This walk in the Moffat Hills was done on 10th February 2010 in winter conditions and is a supplement to the Saddle Yoke/Hartfell Round pages which date back some years. Parking is at Blackshope just east of Capplegill farm on the A708 (OS Grid Reference NT144097), and is limited (by the legitimate domestic requirements of Blackshope house) to around space for 3 cars.

The route is done anti-clockwise usually, starting with the steady climb onto Saddle Yoke. Going clockwise you would start with an ascent from Capplegill to Black Craig which is very steep - though by heading further west along the A708 beyond Capplegill before starting to climb you could make that ascent somewhat easier. You would want to keep that easier route in mind when descending this section in slippery conditions.

This is one of the best routes for variety of terrain and visual interest in the south west of Scotland. The Moffat hills have two other particularly fine walks - the route round Carrifran Glen and the routes from Grey Mare's Tail around Loch Skene.
There is a further map on page 12 which shows Blackhope Glen in more detail.
