30 This again is where the wee valley that we have come down meets the Enterkin Burn but here we are looking back up that valley with Steygail on the right.
Sandy has a theory that it would have been at this point (OS Ref. NS883087 ) at the very bottom of the Enterkin Pass that the Harknesses of Mitchellslacks ambushed a party of dragoons who were taking covenanting prisoners to jail in Edinburgh during the "Killing Times" of the late 17th Century. It certainly looks like the best place in the Pass and it's approaches for the Harknesses to set up their ambush and then escape back to Mitchellslacks Their escape route in that case would be up through our wee valley and down the steep descent on the other side of the saddle that you see in the second picture on page 26 - thence down by Troloss, over by what is now Daer Reservoir, up the Daer Water, over Daer Hass, then down past Burleywag and so back home to Mitchellslacks - see main map.
Sandy is busy reliving the scene by the looks of him.
The other good place for an ambush in the Enterkin Pass, at the foot of Glenvalentine (OS Ref. NS 878077) can be seen on Page 9 - I have put a red asterisk on the picture on that page. You can see that that point too would have fine little shoulders to hide behind close to the bridle path for a likely ambush.
Others say the ambush would have been at the head of the pass near the saddle between East Mount Lowther and Lowther hill - see page 16.
