02 There is an excellent Aviation Museum in Dumfries on the site of a World War two airfield to the east of the town. The information below has been gleaned from information they have collected about aircraft crash sites in the south west of Scotland, which is an ungoing project with them. There were numerous airfields in the area during WW2 involved in the training of pilots, gunners and navigators. Consequently there were a considerable number of incidents during this time - many more than are shown below. However since this is a hill walking site I have included only the sites which a hill walker is likely to come across though at many of these sites there is little left to see and when visiting any of these sites you must be aware that you cannot remove anything from the site.

"The remains of all aircraft which crashed while in military service, whether on land or at sea, are protected by the Protection of Military Remains Act 1968. It is an offence under this act to tamper with, damage, move or unearth remains unless the Secratary of State has issued a Licence authorising such things to be done, and they are done in accordance with the conditions of the Licence." - Ministry of Defense

In the table below crash sites with links attached link to pages which have pictures and further information about the crash site shown elsewhere on this site.
