17 Get your compass out and
take a NE bearing from the cairn at the top of Darnaw and you'll come down
to this memorial to four people killed in an air crash here on the 2nd
of February 1937 not long after the building of the dam for the reservoir.
Legend has it that in poor conditions they took the reservoir to be the
Solway Firth since it wasn't marked on their map and that is how they came
to hit Darnaw. The memorial is in a quite spectacular situation overlooking Clatteringshaws with Cairnsmore of Dee beyond. There are a number of other crash sites in these hills - most notably on Cairnsmore of Fleet, Craignaw and the North Gairy of Corserine |
