01 The walk shown in this web gallery is the blue one in the map above and I did it on 2nd April 2009 in a counter-clockwise direction.
The Southern Upland Way is shown by a line of red dots.
In the past we have done the dark red route in a counter-clockwise direction - getting the section from Craigencallie to White Laggan (where you have to walk on forest roads) over and done with first.
We have also gone from Millfore up onto Curleywee (shown in purple) and back by White Laggan and the dark red route.
The light brown route is a substantial forest track. If you feel that the blue route shown here is too much for you - and it is tough - then you could split the walk into two shorter walks by coming down off Millfore and just returning by the light brown route - without going onto Darnaw. Or alternatively, you could come up the light brown route from Craigencallie and just go over Munwhul onto Darnaw and then straight back to Craigencallie from there.
I took six and a half hours to the blue route.
The picture below was taken as I approached Clatteringshaws Reservoir from New Galloway on the A712 (which continues over to Newton Stewart) and it shows the relationship between Darnaw, Cairngarroch. Craiglee and Darrou as you see them from there. We will have views from there back towards Clatteringshaws for most of the day ahead. Mouseover to see the names of the hills.
