02 Parking for this walk is at what used to be Craigencallie Outdoor
Centre and you might find it recorded as such in older Ordnance Survey
maps. However, the Outdoor Centre was sold off into private hands by the
Government in 2011. It became occupied as a private house in 2018. You will know that
you have arrived there though when you come to the Forestry Commission's
gate immediately inside of which it says "no unauthorised vehicles
beyond this point" and the nearby Craigencallie House (on your left
as you arrive) is the only one for miles. The picture above is taken from
the car park looking WNW up at the gairies (crags) on the face of Cairngarroch
ridge.
We head through the gate and up past a passing place for timber trucks
on your right to where the track bends to the left and you can see on
your left that the tail of Cairngarroch Ridge is coming quite rapidly
down to road level. As soon as you are clear of the trees and have open
access to the hill you can start making your way up onto the ridge.<br>
The picture below was taken from the top of the crags. The red asterisk
shows where the car was parked. The grounds of Craigencallie House are
contained within the walled area in the foreground.
