11 Just before you arrive at Powillimount you come across this rock feature that is popular with aspiring rock climbers. It is called the Thirl Stane though as you can see in the second picture it really consists of two large rocks leaning against each other with a bit of a gap between them through to the sea. The gap through to the sea is known as Thirlstane Arch. The third picture was taken from the top of the Thirl Stane, though you don't need to be a rock climber to get there. On the seaward side, the rocks sit at a much more gentle angle such that most folk would have no problems with climbing them. You can see that we are beginning to get some sandy beaches now although rock formations continue to be interesting nere. You can also see the lighthouse at Southerness on the horizon. |
