10 The route along from Carsethorn to Powillimount is dependent on the state of the tide. When the tide is out you can do most of the journey along the shore, though most of this route is over stoney or rock-strewn beaches such as you see in the picture above. When the tide is higher you can get along the edge of the fields which adjoin the beach.

In the picture above you can see Allan taking pictures of the fossils that you find on the rocks near Arbigland and in the first picture below you can see what he was able to find here. There are plenty of these fossils here and they are not difficult to find, though you should not go damaging them.

In the third and fourth pictures you can see a large erratic sitting on the shore at Arbigland. This stone is know locally as the Devil's Stane and legend has it that the Devil took a bite out of Criffel and spat it out here - perhaps because his false teeth could not cope with it. We have always know the house that you see in the fourth picture as the House-on-the-Shore (though it does not say so on the OS map) and that is where the road from Arbigland comes down to the beach.
