09 Criffel dominates the inland view no matter where you are along the west bank of the River Nith estuary. In the picture above we see it under snow from the point where the road swings into the village of Carsethorn. You can walk northward along the shore at Carse Bay until you come to the point, shown in the first picture below, where the Prestonmill Burn runs into the estuary.

During the World War 2 the estuary was used for gunnery practice and the watch tower shown in the third picture would be associate with this. However there are no other significant World War remains around the estuary that I am aware of. Further west into Galloway there was much more military activity. Garlieston for example was a centre for the development of the Mulberry Harbour and there are still many World War 2 remains still to be found there. There is the remains of a WW 2 Anson on the top of Criffel and the WW2 aerodrome at Heathhall still preserves much of its original character even to the extent of having old aeroplanes there at the Dumfries and Galloway Aviation Museum and then of course there is the "Devil's Porridge" factory at Gretna from WW1 which you can still visit.
