08 To get to Carsethorn you turn off the A701 at Kirkbean. Above is a view looking north-westward across Carse Bay to Criffel from the shore at Carsethorn. You can see a dilapidated pier in the foreground. The first mention of a harbour at Carsethorn is in 1562. Carsethorn became a busy port for Dumfries and also, many shiploads of people sailed from here to a new life in America. Any ship putting in to Carsethorn which had fever aboard was placed in quarantine in Carse Bay.

The third picture on this page shows a seat in the form of a ship with the names of emigrants shipped on board the "Lovely Nelly" from Carsethorn in 1774 and 1775 to St John's Island, North America. There is an information board accompanying the seat which gives more information about this.

The second picture gives a view acorss the estuary. Ward Law is where the dark clump of trees is near the right edge of the picture.
