06 This walled structure is shown
as a "dun" on the map a word or prefix which is usually associated
with a castle or stronghold and this one is called Castle
Haven. Relics found during the clearance of this site include both Early Iron Age and 8th/9th century objects, as well as a human skeleton which was found on the floor of the outer court, against the E wall of the central structure - taken from the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historic Monuments of Scotland's website. On the other side of the bay you can see the cairn on the top of the hill we went up to first. In the picture below Dunkie is down within the walled area of the dun. |
