This area is centred round the former milltown of Gatehouse
of Fleet which lies about half way between Dumfries and Stranraer
just off the A75.
This is a very good area for anyone looking for plenty of scenic walking
that is not too strenuous or remote from civilisation. There is coastline,
high moorland, ancient woodland, river walks, historical and achaelogical
interest, and stately park land all within a short distance of Gatehouse.
There is all the flora and fauna that you would expect in a rural setting,
yet Gatehouse at it's heart has excellent facilities for the visitor in
terms of food, accommodation. and things to do.
Gatehouse bears the appearance of an 18th century cotton mill town and
was used by Walter Scott as the basis for the fictional "Kippletringan"
in his novel Guy Mannering.
