01 This route relates closely to the Lowther and Green Lowther by the Southern Upland Way web gallery and the Comb Law, Rodger Law, Ballencleuch Law and Scaw'd Law gallery and taken with them provides a rounded understanding of this north east extremity of the Lowther hills. There will be several cross references to these other walks as we go along.
This walk completes the coverage on this site of the whole string of Lowther hills from end to end - from the Nith to the Clyde. Using two cars you could do the whole string in one day.
For some odd reason I had never been in these particular hills until I did this walk on 10th March 2009, though I have been through the rest of the Lowther and Durisdeer hills many times. I found it to be a walk very well worth doing indeed. It took me 5 hours and 50 minutes. However, just by looking at the map above you can see that you could easily make several shorter variants of it. You could simply visit Glenochar Bastle and Fermtoun and then go up onto Lousie Wood Law (which has spectacular 360 degree views) and come back down via Great Hill, or, go on as far as Dun Law and come down via Kneesend, for example.
Remember that in Scotland you have the right to roam where you will. Of course this means you could also make it longer by going right on till Lowther Hill itself and coming back down by the Southern Upland Way as in the Green Lowther walk mentioned above.
As has been the case in most of the walks shown on this site I met not a single person all day in the hills, which makes the whole experience so different from normal town life - it really is a tonic for the soul.
