14 Here is the triangulation point on the top of the Merrick. The stone stucture here is not really a cairn - more of a shelter wall that people have put up to protect themselves from the wind.
Moving over to the northern end of the top of the Merrick in the picture below we get this view up into Ayrshire. We are looking north along the line of the Awful Hand range with Little Speir (a small shoulder of Merrick) in the right foreground. Beyond that is Kirriereoch in the left foreground, with Shalloch on Minnoch beyond it. Tarfessock lies between Kirriereoch and Shalloch on Minnoch but you can't see it - these three hills along with the Merrick and Benyellary make the five fingers of the Awful Hand. The "fingers" are the series of ridges which run west from these five tops. The loch that you can see in the distance on the right is Loch Doon.
