13 That's the Steps of Bennan
in the picture above with Cairnsmore of Dee beyond. This shot was actually
taken in telephoto from Millfore but it fits into the sequence best at this
point. We have to get right down to the bottom right of this picture and
keep to the right (south) of the crags to begin with. This is tough territory
- sheep don't graze here and the grass has gone into crazy lumps so that
you never know if you will step on top of a clump or go down a hole up to
the knees (or beyond) - great leg breaking territory. My advice is to stick
to the heather as much as you can - at least it is usually supportive of
your weight and I don't recommend this route when the bracken is up - it
would be a nightmare. The second picture shows our old friends Craignelder and Cairnsmore of Fleet from Mulwhurn. The third picture shows just what this territory is like as I look back from the Steps of Bennan to Mulwhurn - an ugly sounding name to go aptly with ugly irregular sullen territory. As you can see that is a steep descent down to the bottom of the valley between Mulwhurn and Steps of Bennan and you don't realise that it is there until you get to the top of it while coming off Mulwhurn. Millfire is in the background. |
