11 In these three pictures you can see this build up of drifting snow on the Dumfries and Galloway side of the dry stane dyke and the amazing shapes the wind has created as it played with the snow. You can see the snow was as high as the dyke. The difficulty of climbing Fauldside Hill in soft snow had me wondering whether I would have the stamina to keep going all the way to Ettrick Pen and I was seriously considering the escape route I mentioned on page 01 - going down the SUW to Over Phawhope. But I was gambling on the snow being more solid on the top of the ridge and that proved to be wise. In places I was able to walk along the top of the snow drift by the dyke without penetrating much into it.
The second picture shows the view back towards Bodesbeck from White Shank.
In the third shot we are looking north east to the hills that surround Ettrick Water as it makes its way north east over into the border country and its meeting with the Yarrow Water at Philiphaugh.
