01 This map will look somewhat confusing at first glance because there seem to be so many different routes shown in it. However, the blue route (done anticlockwise) is the one illustrated in this web gallery and all the rest are possible variants. It starts from between Glenkirk and Glencotho, heads onto Chapelgill Hill, then Culter Fell, Gathersnow Hill, Coomb Law, Broomy Law and down by Glenlood.
The orange route up over Congrie Hill would be easier cutting out the stiff climb up onto Chapelgill Hill
The brown route is also a shorter alternative coming down from Culter Fell directly onto the track past Holms Waterhead and in fact this is the route Sandy did as you will see.
The green route would again cut out a descent/re-ascent between Coomb Hill and Glenlood Hill.
The red route would take you over the top of Glenlood to where we were parked.
The purple route is one we did some years ago from Glenhighton going clockwise along the ridge to Gathersnow Hill first, then north to Culter Fell, Chapelgill Hill and Cardon hill. The end of this route is a bit awkward since you have to find your way down through woods onto forest roads to get down from the hill.
I thoroughly enjoyed the less complicated blue route and it took me less than 5 hours.
This was the first and most northerly of a string of 5 adjoining walks done in 2008. The others are discussed in the following web galleries:
North Manor Hills
,
Broad Law and Dollar Law,
Lochcraig Head from the Megget Stane
Loch Skene in Winter
Taken together these walks will give you a fair impression of a whole north/south slice through these West Border Hills.
