05 In the picture above you can see Sweetheart Abbey in the village of New Abbey near the bottom left corner. We are looking over the valley of the River Nith (Nithsdale) to the Moffat hills in the distance.

The second picture shows what the route ahead is like as you make for the top of Knockendoch. The steepest part of the whole route is the last stretch to the top of Knockendoch. This is a popular hill walk and so there is plenty of damage done by the many feet which create wet muddy patches after rain and plenty of ice in conditions such as are shown here. It can be treacherous.
