11 West of Kirkstead Hill there is a deep cleuch between it and Capper Law. We made our way north westward across the head of this cleuch and ended up in the saddle between Capper Law and Henderland Hill - which is where we are in the picture above. At this point I was convinced I was in the saddle to the east of Henderland Hill. I was quite disorientated and finding it hard to believe my compass. But the compass and the corner of the fence shown on the map don't lie. This problem may have been due to the fact that St Mary's Loch takes a considerable turn to the south just below Capper Law.
The hills that you see in the distance above the fence post in the picture above are the Moffat Hills. You can also just see part of the Bodesbeck Ridge (in the Ettrick Hills) right at the extreme left of the picture. Moffatdale lies between these two sets of hills.
In the picture below I have swung my line of vision some 20 degrees further to the SW and now you can see the whole line of the Bodesbeck Ridge with probably the top of Loch Fell showing at the left edge of the picture.
