09 However before we climb Hartfell Rig we have to descend into Whirly Gill and the pictures on this page are taken at that stage.
In the picture above we are looking SW from Under Saddle Yoke. Hound Shoulder is just right of centre on the far side of Blackhope Glen and Hound Bank the northern edge of Black Craig is on the left.
The second picture shows the climb out of Whirly Gill onto Hartfell Rig and in the third picture we are looking west: Falcon Craig is left of centre with Hartell Craig right of centre and Hartfell beyond that.
The top picture was taken at 11.27, the second at 11.44 and the third at 11.49. Whirly Gill rises steeply from Blackhope valley floor and so you have to move to the right (eastward) as you descend into the Gill to minimise the amount of descent and re-ascent in the saddle.
