17 There is a triangulation
point on the top of Green Lowther (732 mts) and in the picture above we
are looking past it with a bit of zoom down to Wanlockhead,
the highest village in Scotland at just under 1500 ft. In the picture below I have zoomed in further. We stayed in the schoolhouse down there for around three months back in 1976 after we left the Isle of Eigg in the Inner Hebrides where we had stayed for 13 months (till the new laird got rid of us, and a long string of others after us, before the people on the island eventually got rid of him - somewhat unceremoniously), but that is another story. Enough to say that my wife found it lonelier in Wanlockhead than on Eigg (which in those days had only 60 souls aboard). At the time we lived in Wanlockhead you could get a bus each Wednesday afternoon to the grand metropolis of Sanquhar and that was your lot for public transport to the flesh pots for the week. |
