07 Once you get to the Almorness side of the bay you will find a gate straight in front of you but just on the left beside the gate you will find a little-used path heading south down the west side of the peninsula. It would appear that in times past this has been a much more substantial track. This Solway coast was notorious in the 18th century for smuggling and there are several very nice bays on this peninsula for just such activities. So if we could flip back in time on this track we could well be meeting strings of ling-towmen (as they were called) with their pack horses making their way in the dead of night with their contraband. Ling tow was the name for the rope smugglers used. Not people to be argued with!
We could also imagine Scotland's National Bard, Robert Burns, who was an exciseman in the this area in the latter stages of his life, riding along here just like Allan but with serious business in mind.
