01 St Ninian came to be bishop at Whithorn around 397 AD. He is said to be the Founder of Christianity in Scotland - he was here some years before St Columba came to Iona in 563 AD - though of course we do not know exact dates. Whithorn has been a place of pilgrimage since medieval times.
This walk visits both the cave which Ninian is said to have used as a retreat and also St Ninian's Chapel at Isle of Whithorn - the existing building there is of much later date but an early building was probably on this site. We followed the coast from the cave to the chapel but came back by a tarred road to the campsite at Burrow Head and rejoined the coastal path back to Physgill. It took us 6 hours including time for lunch at Isle of Whithorn.
