01 This is a walk through an area which is very rich in historical interest - ancient and modern. The modern connection is with Gavin Maxwell whose family had an estate at Monreith. Our walk will take us through this estate where we will have a look at the 16th century Myrton Castle and the crannog nearby it. We will visit the memorial to Gavin Maxwell (in the form of an otter) which is near to the remains of Kirkmaiden Church (one of the oldest churches in Scotland) - there is another Kirkmaiden Church in the Rhins of Galloway which can lead to a bit of confusion.
On the top of the Fell of Barhullion (136 metres) there is an ancient fort. Beyond Barhullion we will visit the Standing Stones of Drumtroddan dating from the second millenium B.C. All around the area there are many Cup and ring marked stones, stone circles and ancient homesteads which you could also visit as variants to this walk. You can see what I mean on the Ordnance Survey map (Explorer Series 311).
We did this walk on 7th April 2010 and we took around five and three quarter unhurried hours to it.
