22 As you approach the castle you come along the edge of a field as you see in the picture above, but it is only the very last section which is on the field side of the wall. Until then you are on the seaward side where the nettles and brambles are out to get you if you have shorts on. Cairnharrow is in the distance in the middle of the picture.
There really isn't that much left of the castle which was once a seat of the Earls of Galloway. It is hard to believe just how much action these humble remains have seen. Edward the First of England captured it and William Wallace won it back (just for starters) during the Wars of Independence. It is also a thought worth considering that in the bleak times of the 1940's this quiet forgotten corner was again central to the making of a nation's destiny. Yet another such major turning point in the nation's history occured when St Ninian arrived at Whithorn (just down the road from here) in the early 5th century to start spreading the Christian gospel across Scotland.
