13 When the going gets too awkward along the rocky shore line you can again make your way back up to the path along the edge of the field. Here we are looking south and that is Sliddery Point that you see in the distance. Cruggleton Castle, where we will be going later in the day, is beyond that point.
In the first picture below you can see that we have now arrived at the war remains. It seems these are "beetles" but without the superstructure that supported the steel spans of the floating pier (see page 03) which were known as "crocodiles".
You will be able to see these redundant "beetles" from the path quite easily as you come along.
That again is Cairnharrow right on the left edge of the picture, with Barholm Hill in front of it and Ben John just right of centre.
The second picture below shows a busy "beetle" on the move in Garlieston Bay. You can see that they put a wooden fairing onto it to give it a bow while it was being towed - from left to right across the picture in this case.
