The above map shows what has been called the "Cradle of Scottish Independence". It was here that Robert the Bruce hid as a fugitive while launching his first successful battles before the decisive battle of Bannockburn in 1314, and it was around here that they were fought as his fortune changed for the better. This is the real heart of the Galloway hills. A truly spectacular area of wilderness far away from public roads and all but the determined walker. If you want freedom to roam among a landscape of complex hill ranges steeped in history, burns, lochs, quaking bog, rock slabs and huge skies that throw all weathers at you, then this will be a heaven for you for life. The challenges it will present to you will give you some idea of what Bruce faced in those dark times in Scotland's history.
