15 The 2 pictures on this page were taken on the top of Long Grain Knowe. It had taken me about 12 minutes to come across the rough moorland from Middle Hill. In the picture above we are looking onwards to the next part of our route, though that is not Pykestone Hill you see here - just a small rise you cross on your way to it. However you can see that you are never stuck for a fence to follow. The Thief's Road is just slightly out of the picture to the right.
From Long Grain Knowe as in the picture below, you can now see through to the hills ENE over the valley of the Manor Water to the Hundleshope Heights which lie just south of Peebles and SW of Innerleithen. A line taken due south from Edinburgh would pass through Peebles, and here on Long Grain Knowe we are less than 10 kms west of that line.
