This lively poem was written by James Hogg (1779-1835) He was known as the Ettrick Shepherd. The poem appeared in a book published in 1832 called "A Queer Book, by the Ettrick Shepherd" This book has now been republished (2007) by Edinburgh University Press - edited by P.D. Garside. In the poem you will find many references to Saddle Yoke, Carrifran and the Grey Mare's Tail area.
