14 Looking north East from the saddle between Nickies Knowe and Talla East Side and using a bit of telephoto we can see the Eildons over by Melrose.
In the picture below I have zoomed further into the above picture to bring out these hills which have so much folk legend attached to them. Legend has it that the Eildon Hills were created when Sir Michael Scott set the Devil 3 tasks. The first of these was to cleave the head of mighty Eildon Hill into three, the second was to bridle the Tweed with a Cauld above Kelso and yet another was to make ropes from sand in the caves beneath Coldingham. The first two were completed with ease but the last trial keeps the Devil busy to this day, since the tide keeps washing his work away. Eildon is said to be a "hollow hill", and is mentioned in the legend of Thomas the Rhymer. Some believe Thomas went under the hill itself, and certainly part of the ballad occurs in the vicinity.
