09 Walking along the merse like this down near Castle Corner at Caerlaverock lets you immerse yourself in a lonely flat secret ever-changing world. It presents an altogether different experience from being on a hilltop where you can feel a certain dominance over the surrounding landscape. You can see Carsethorn on the far shore (just to the left of the walker) and the holiday village of Southerness is on the point of land sticking out into the Solway Firth. You can walk right round to Caerlaverock Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust Centre from here but you really need wellies in the merse and there are many deep watery channels to get round. In the winter of course there are plenty of geese around here. The final shots are just by way of goodbye to this fascinating landscape. They show something of the constantly changing moods as we look across the estuary of the River Nith towards Criffel and Knockendoch. |
