Crossing towards the remains of the earlier castle at Caerlaverock

14 Here we are crossing to have a look at the remains of the first castle which was built here at Caerlaverock. This is now not much more than a ground plan. It was very quickly found to be too damp and unsatisfactory and was abandoned at an early date.

The Caerlaverock Castle which Edward 1 of England besieged in 1300 ad and this earlier castle are maintained by Historic Scotland and there is a charge for visiting the castles. It is however possible for a walker to walk past these castles without charge on the road which gives access to a house near the edge of Castle Wood provided always that you stick to the road and don't enter the precincts of the castles' grounds when of course you will be liable for the entry charge.
