34 Now we are descending the rough track back to Birkhill and the car is still sitting there thank goodness - it's 33 miles back from here to Dumfries where I stay and by this time I was very glad to be doing it by car and not on foot. You can see the line of the border between Borders Region and Dumfries and Galloway Region in this picture - as it follows the dyke down past the trees on the left and starts to climb up past the pylon on the right. The white sign that you see by the roadside welcomes you to Dumfries and Galloway Region (as you travel from right to left across the picture). Birkhill Cottage (in the foreground) was the residence of a ground breaking geologist called Charles Lapworth (between 1872 and 1877) - as you can see on page 35.
